School-Aged Program (8-13 years old)
YOUth CAN supports school success through parental involvement, academic
enrichment, and small group learning settings.  Members engage in one hour daily
individualized tutoring, homework assistance and homework completion.
Individualized tutoring conducted by staff allows us to identify youth problem areas

and strengthen performance in those subjects.

We encourage youth to work as designers, inventors, and creators on collaborative
projects that interest them with the support of staff in a welcoming environment. The
twelve-station computer facility is a place where youth engage in the exploration of
typing, presentation, graphic art, 3-D architecture, digital photography, video
production and creative writing. Youth create journals, poetry, greeting cards,
manipulate images, and construct virtual cities using industry standard technology
such as Adobe Creative Suite, Adobe Premiere, and Google Sketch Up.
Furthermore, the art studio is a place where youth immerse in experimental and
abstract art, creating self-portraits, paintings, ceramics, T-Shirts, customized bags,
buttons and other arts & craft projects.
Programs
The Teen Music Program is sponsored by Studio 5090. The program documents
youth voices as they consciously identify and address social issues to promote
change within themselves and their communities. The purpose is to have teens
target problems and develop solutions as they engage in various expressions
through music and sound. In the music program, youth work together to write,
produce, and engineer professional studio recordings.  Mentors serve as instructors
such as Pro Tools HD, Logic, and Reason on a Mac platform.

Members are involved in song composition, production and engineering. Macro
and micro group projects, with a teen team leader in each group, encourage teen
leadership and individual responsibility. In addition to their gaining a working
knowledge of computer programs, their social skills are being developed as they
troubleshoot problems, resolve conflict, and develop healthy relationships with their
peers and mentors. Communication, image and public speaking skills are developed
and enhanced in this program.
